Reinventing Careers
is a two-day workshop that provides employees an opportunity to reexamine their careers and the assumptions, expectations and aspirations upon which those careers have been based and to make deliberate and conscious choices about their futures.

Rationale for the Course.
For many employees, their lives at work are both bewildering and painful. As many organizations go through mergers, reorganizations, and even downsizing, some employees are faced with the prospect of an immediate job loss, while many others, though perhaps secure for the moment, are being forced to re-examine their careers, question the validity of the assumptions on which those careers have been built, and wonder about their futures.

Career decisions are becoming harder and harder to make, while the idea of planning for a future that will almost certainly be characterized by continued change seems more and more futile. The decisions which many employees need to make about their lives and careers seem to be more and more determined by powerful forces outside themselves.

In the face of a these changes, employees must begin reinventing their own careers, and this two-day workshop can provide the tools for that re-examination. Employees can take a more active stance towards personal and professional decision-making and make conscious and informed choices based on their personal values, goals and attitudes and on the physical, social and personal forces acting on and within them. Reinventing Careers can provide assistance in making these important and even inevitable decisions.

The Program

Life Transitions.
Participants are asked to reflect on current changes in their lives and careers, to explore past and future transitions, and to assess the amount of change-induced stress they are currently experiencing in their personal and professional lives.

Life Inventory.
Participants are involved in a series of reflective and interactive exercises to help identify current strengths, skills and expectations.

Images of the Future.
Through guided imagery, personal reflection, writing and small group discussion, participants begin exploring in detail their hopes, expectations and fears for the future.

“The Strong Interest Inventory.”
This inventory helps participants compare their interests with the interests of people who are happily and successfully employed in a variety of careers and occupations. Participants identify shared occupational interests and target areas to explore for possible career change.

Building a Project.
Participants ensure that the workshop will have an immediate impact on their careers by developing specific plans for next steps. Each participant identifies a specific, realistic career goal, analyzes the positive and negative forces currently acting on that goal and develops a specific plan of action.
